Long Beach school board asks Cuomo to set up temporary hospital on the barrier island

The Long Beach School Board has asked Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other state officials to serve up some type of hospital facility on the barrier beach.

In a letter to Cuomo and other state officials, the board noted that the only hospital on the barrier beach, Long Beach Medical Center, has been closed since it was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy in 2102.

The closest hospital to the barrier beach now is Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital in Oceanside

Schools Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Gallagher said in a letter to parents that Cuomo should consider making use of the Long Beach Medical Center for "extra beds." But in its letter to the governor, no mention is made of the closed medical center.

The board members asked for "an immediate" feasibility study and site assessment for 'a temporary facility" to care for those sickened by the coronavirus.

According to the Nassau County Health Department, there are 56 reported cases of the coronavirus on the barrier beach

A spokesman for Cuomo could not be reached Thursday night
