Mark Miccio, a senior in mechanical engineering at Penn State University and a 2006 Lynbrook High School graduate, is involved in the Penn State Advanced Vehicle Team and EcoCAR competition.
EcoCAR is a three-year student engineering competition among 17 universities across North America that focuses on redesigning a 2009 GM-Donated Vehicle to reduce its environmental impact.
“Hybrid technology is the technology of the present and is leading the development for future vehicle advancement,”said Miccio. “The EcoCAR project shows that Penn State is concerned about the future and is doing their part to support the environment.” He is working closely with others in the competition to convert the vehicle into an Extended Range Electric Vehicle (E-REV) plug-in series hybrid. Since joining the team and the competition, he feels EcoCAR is an important asset to the Penn State students and the community.
Miccio is also involved with outreach events with students in grades K-12. He said, “By presenting our experiences with EcoCAR to younger students, we promote an interest in the science field and get them excited about learning. It is very fulfilling to know we may have made a difference in a child’s life.”
