LPS board pitches $21M bond

The bond, which is not to exceed $21,310,240, would be used for building and site improvement projects around the district, if passed.
Some of the improvements could include roof reconstruction and replacement at various schools, window replacements at the high school, fire safety improvements, and a number of improvements on the districtsÕ electrical ventilation, heating, air conditioning, and lighting systems.
Superintendent Dr. Mark Rosenbaum said he understands that many residents may see the $21 million bond as a more than they wanted to spend [in taxes] but he hopes that the community will realize that the repairs are necessary to keep the buildings safe and as good learning environments.
The bond is so important to maintain the integrity of the buildings he said. We have to get this work done.
He added that passing the budget is just as important because if it does not pass, the district will go on austerity, forcing a number of cuts to be made in many areas.
Assistant superintendent of business, Sam Donato, said he was not sure how much the bond would raise taxes over 30 years because of the flux in tax assessments. He added that with some 30-year bond issues which are also ending next month and the proposed cuts in state aid, it is hard to tell right now what the tax hike will be overall, but a projection will be made soon.
The bond would include about $3 million in roof repairs to all schools except the high school.
