During the Tuesday, Oct. 1, Lawrence school board work session, principals were questioned by board members about what they are doing to ensure the protection of their students and staff.
A random check by the Herald of school buildings in Lawrence and Hewlett-Woodmere on Sept. 18 and 19 found some security breakdowns, including doors left wide open at Lawrence Middle School and Hewlett High School. In addition, the Herald reporter was buzzed in at several Lawrence schools and allowed to roam the hallways for several minutes with no one questioning the purpose for the visit. Most of the schools, however, passed the test, while the others scored a needs improvement.
The Herald wrote an article on its findings and an editorial about the hope to see improvements in the future.
