Congregants of the Lynbrook Baptist Church made up for their 1-point loss last year to members of the Lynbrook Fire Department with a 69–59 win at the annual charity basketball game benefitting the Lynbrook Community Chest and Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior on Nov. 18 at Lynbrook High School.

“It’s always nice to win,” said Pastor Bob Walderman.

His adversary at the game was Kevin Bien, the chairman of Operation Wounded Warriors for the Lynbrook Fire Department. Bien said that his team fought hard in defeat.

“A couple of times, the Fire Department made it close and the church would come back,” he said.

Bien added that the almost 200 people who were at the game enjoyed it. “Everyone had a good time for a good reason,” he said.

The basketball game raised more than $8,000 from ticket sales and raffles, which will be split evenly between Operation Wounded Warrior and the Lynbrook Community Chest. Operation Wounded Warrior is a nonprofit that provides wounded members of the armed services with clothing, entertainment and get well cards, as well as organizes welcome home greetings for local soldiers and marines. The Lynbrook Community Chest is a charitable organization that seeks to provide assistance to Lynbrook residents who are facing financial hardships.

“We do this out of our love for Christ and his charge to be a good neighbor,” Walderman said. “It’ sour way of reaching out.”
