The Lynbrook Fire Department is hosting a Community Concert for the Troops on Sunday, Sept. 30 to benefit the Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior.

The concert will take place from noon to 6 p.m. in front of Rescue Hook, Ladder and Bucket Company No. 1 on Earle Avenue. The road will be closed from Merrick Road to Sunrise Highway starting approximately an hour before the event starts and after it ends.

Ex-Chief Kevin Bien is heading up the fire department’s effort to throw the concert and said he is looking forward to the day.

“Besides raising money we’re trying to raise awareness,” he said. “Some people are coming back from the war and they’re not in the same shape they were when they left. People should really take note of this and do whatever they can to try help these people and support our military.”

Last year marked the first time the fire department hosted the event. Bien, a member of the Lynbrook Fire Department for 30 years, said more than $12,000 was raised, and all of the proceeds went to Operation Wounded Warrior. He is hoping to hit a similar mark this year and is off to a good start after the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce donated two checks totaling $1,250 to the event at the Sept. 10 village board meeting.

“Because this is such a wonderful effort that’s being made on behalf of the fire department for the benefit of the Wounded Warrior, the chamber of commerce got on board,” said Bill Gaylor, president of the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce.

Gaylor added that he thinks this year’s event will be even more successful than last year. “I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in Lynbrook coming down there and supporting this cause,” he said. “It’s the most worthwhile thing that they can do.”

Bien said the fire department has been involved with Operation Wounded Warrior for the last five years. He has made trips to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. and appreciates the sacrifice that they military personnel have made.
