Lynbrook firefighters knock down condo fire

Posted

Lynbrook firefighters quickly knocked down a fire in the living room of a second floor unit at the Coachlight Condominiums off Atlantic Avenue opposite the Atlantic Avenue School on Monday night.

Firefighters, under the command of Chief Edward Hynes were sent to Building 106 shortly after 5 PM after a neighbor across the parking lot heard an alarm sounding and called the fire department.

Upon their arrival no smoke could be seen but water from the sprinkler system was found cascading from the balcony of Unit 17 just off Atlantic Avenue.  Engine Company 1 was first on the scene and dropped at a hydrant in the complex.

They stretched a hose line with the help of other arriving fire units to the second floor where the unit front door was forced open. As blinding and choking smoke billowed from the front door, firefighter made there way inside and found a fire in the living room and climbing up the wall.  It was quickly extinguished but not before the unit was ventilated to clear the smoke so firefighters could work. The fire was stopped before it progressed beyond the living room.

The homeowners were not home and the fire was not consider suspicious.  The Fire Marshal’s Office was called for a routine investigation. During the beginning stages of the attack on the fire, Chief Hynes called for an additional ladder to the scene from the East Rockaway FD under the command of Chief Ed Reicherter, while Rockville Centre FD stood-by to cover other Lynbrook alarms.  Lynbrook firefighters were at the scene for about an hour and 15 minutes. There were no reported injuries and although the fire was contained to the one unit there was some water damage to the units below it.
