Lynbrook firefighters tackle house blaze

Lynbrook firefighters made a quick stop of a fire in the wall of a house on Stratford Road last Saturday before it spread throughout the home.

The firefighters, under the command of First Assistant Chief John Chavatte, were called out shortly before 2 p.m. a reported fire at 49 Stratford Road off Piccadilly Downs in the Yorkshire section of Lynbrook. Third Assistant Chief Carl Lengel was first on the scene, and found smoke coming from the driveway side of the house and a fire in the wall and under the floor in a back bedroom. There was only one occupant at the house at the time, and she was found outside.

Tally-Ho Engine Company 3 was first on the scene and immediately stretched two lines while hooking up to the hydrant a short distance from the house. Tally-Ho members took the first line inside, while members of Engine and Vulcan Company members who had also arrived took in a second line.

Later, Hose Company members stretched a third line. While the hose was being stretched into the home to fight the fire, Truck Company arrived on the scene and put its ladder to the roof. They then assisted in pulling down the walls and opening the floor so that water could be put on the fire as the fire moved along the bedroom wall and floor.

The fire was quickly brought under control in about 20 minutes, but firefighters were at the scene for about two hours to make sure the fire was out. At the height of the call, Chavatte, through the Floodlight’s Command Post, requested the assistance of the neighboring Fourth Battalion departments of East Rockaway Malverne, Lakeview and Rockville Centre. Valley Stream also responded.

Due to the structural damage caused by the fire the Village of Lynbrook’s Building Department was notified to determine if the structure is safe enough for the homeowners to move back in. Additionally, the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office was called to conduct a routine investigation of the cause of the fire.

The damage was placed at about $30,000. There were no injuries.
