Lynbrook kindergartners plant penny tree

Posted

As part of their celebration of Ecology Week, students at the Lynbrook Kindergarten Center gathered together on Arbor Day to plant a “Penny Tree.”

Each student had brought in 100 pennies on the 100th day of school to buy the “Penny Tree” and a plaque commemorating the tree as a gift from the Class of 2023. Then on Arbor Day, all the students in the school took part in the planting by adding a shovelful of dirt to help give the tree an auspicious beginning.

To add to the festivities, the kindergartners sang songs to celebrate the earth while wearing crazy ecology-themed hats that they made from 100 percent recycled materials. Each hat served as a personal statement on the importance of protecting the environment for future generations.

This event was part of an annual Kindergarten Center tradition, leaving an environmental legacy of Penny Trees spanning 13 years. The tradition started with the first full-day kindergarten class, who is now the Lynbrook High School Class of 2011.
