SoEun Lee, Lynbrook High School’s Valedictorian of 2013, was this year’s winner of the $4,000 Frank J. Becker Educational Foundation, Inc. Scholarship, awarded at a reception was held at Village Square Restaurant, 23 Atlantic Avenue, Lynbrook on July 11.
The foundation has been granting college scholarships to local high school seniors annually since 1958. The scholarships are given to the students, after an intensive screening process that is based on need as well as educational and other accomplishments.
Frank J. Becker was raised in Lynbrook from very humble circumstances, and left school in the eighth grade to work and help provide for his family. He later went on to serve in the New York State Assembly, and in the United States House of Representatives. He served in the military during World War I, and went on to live the American Dream despite his limited education. In memory of the late congressman Frank Becker, every year since 1958 the Frank J. Becker Educational Foundation awards a $4000 scholarship to a senior of a high school in the 4th congressional district.
“Those of us that remember Congressman Becker feel that this is a great way of keeping his memory alive,” said the foundation’s president, Hilary Becker, who is also the grandson of Frank J. “ However, it is also a way of helping a worthy young person get started with their college education.
“The committee did an outstanding job in selecting Ms. Lee,” Becker continued. “She is a wonderful young lady who we are sure is destined to accomplishing great things for our country. We thank all of our sponsors and contributors for their continued support to this outstanding cause. May God continue to bless them and their loved ones.”
