Lynbrook Titans make top 10 in County

Best County showing in decades, says wrestling program director

The Lynbrook Varsity wrestling team finished its season in the top 10, at 9th place — the team’s best showing in the tough Nassau County Public School wrestling tournament in decades.

Wrestlers Matt Swanson and Zach Kornberg both finished in second place, and Anthony Arena and Joe Becker finished in third place in their respective weight classes. “Every one of our wrestlers are champions the minute they step inside that circle, because the Lynbrook wrestling approach is that winning and losing doesn’t matter, and that good sportsmanship, and trying your best are all that matter,” said Coach Richie Renz. “All of our wrestlers leave the mat the same way they go in — with their heads held high.”

“I watched just about every match this year, and at no time did I ever see anything but great sportsmanship from our wrestlers,” said Hilary Becker, the director of the Lynbrook Titans wrestling program. “Our wrestlers always go over and shake the hands of the other team’s coaches, win or lose. I didn’t see one of our wrestlers pull the classic ‘throwing the head gear act.’ No crying, no pouting, no hot shot celebrating — just wrestlers walking off the mat with their heads held high.” Becker added that this is a testament to their coaches, and true signs of great things to come for all of these fine young men. “Of course we’d like to see all of our wrestlers take first place, but it’s their strong character that makes their coaches proudest

Varsity team dinner planned

The varsity wrestling team will hold its second annual Lynbrook JV and Varsity Wrestling dinner on Thurs., March 3 at 7 p.m. at McQuade’s in Lynbrook.  All family, friends, coaches and supporters are invited. The cost is $30 per person.

“It will be a fun night,” said Becker. “They plan to reflect back on the season as they bid farewell to the senior wrestlers, some who’ve been wrestling since they were 6 or 7-years-old — so it’s going to be an important event, and all are encouraged to attend. For more information, contact Hilary Becker at (516) 887-0677 ext. 303.
