Lynbrook to continue streetscaping projects

Posted

The village of Lynbrook will soon begin a new streetscaping project around town in the next coming months, according to Village Administator John Giordano.

Mayor Bill Hendrick and the village board publicly accepted a $140,000 grant from the Nassau County Community Development Office at their village board meeting on Oct. 17. They also filed an application for a second grant for $450,000 for road improvement mid-October.

The awarded community development funds will allow officials to spruce up and beautify some parts of Hempstead Avenue, targeting an area of strip stores between Alexander and Duncan Avenues, according to Giordano. “The project is very similar to what we did on Broadway and Atlantic Avenue,” he said.

The community development block grant program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Congress designed the CDBG program to enhance and maintain the viability of urban communities, according to the county’s website. Approximately 80% of CDBG funds are distributed to participating local municipalities to undertake programs based on local community needs.

The village first applied for the community development grant in April. Officials were awarded the money in August. It will allow for beautification improvements, including the installation of brick sidewalks, ornamental lighting, and benches on Hempstead Avenue. The village anticipates starting construction in the next 90 days, Giordano said.

Their goal is to work on Hempstead Avenue instrumentally. They will target the strip stores area first, and use remaining funds to upgrade areas north up to the little five corners - intersection of Merrick Road, Broadway and Hempstead and Atlantic Avenues.

Last month, officials filed the road improvement grant in order to repave Rocklyn Avenue and Sherman Street.
