As Lynbrook students are preparing to head back to school for another year, and fall sports teams are practicing for their upcoming seasons, construction crews are now in the tail end of their work at Marion Street Elementary School to complete the district’s new multi-sport, artificial turf field.
Work began on June 24 on the turf field, which was part of a $5.6 million proposition that was approved last June by the Lynbrook community. Also included in the proposition was the resodding of the athletic field at North Middle School and the relocation of the baseball field at South Middle School. According to Superintendent Dr. Melissa Burak, the turf field has come in more than $100,000 under budget and that money will be placed in the district’s capital reserves for future projects.
“We are looking forward to unveiling the new turf field upon its completion so the students and community can enjoy playing and watching games on a professional looking field,” Burak said.
Facilities Director Allan Scotto said the turf field project is on schedule and, with help from Mother Nature, could be completed in early September. A new drainage system has already been installed as well as a layer of stone. After a layer of fine stone gets put down, the turf carpeting will be next. “We’re hoping for substantial completion before school starts, but a lot of that is weather related,” he said. Schools open on Sept. 9.
Once completed, the field will be used by the football, boys and girls soccer, and boys and girls lacrosse teams, Tom Graham, athletic director, said.
Board of Education Trustee Bill Belmont said the turf field will extend the time student-athletes can practice and play because teams won’t be restricted by rain anymore, and there will not be wear on tear on the turf field like there was in years past. “It’s just another example to bring our district up to par on a multitude of different levels,” he said.
