Made with love

Members of the South Shore Section of the National Council of Jewish Women will be starting the third season of their Knitting for the Needy program. The project brings novice and experienced knitters together to learn or teach a new skill while producing scarves and hats that are then donated.

Thus far, NCJW’s South Shore knitters have been purling away, creating hundreds of hand-made scarves that have been given to grateful recipients at the Hispanic Brotherhood of Rockville Centre, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center, the Vineyard Church Food Bank and even to a few homeless men in New York City.

Several of the members have graduated to their latest project: knitted cap inserts for our soldier’s helmets. These are sent overseas and delivered to American armed forces, in Iraq and Afghanistan, who benefit from the warmth and snugness that they provide. They have also created and donated handmade preemie hats that have brought comfort to a number of babies in area hospitals.

The do-gooder weavers are a diverse, growing group of seasoned and unseasoned knitters who meet once a month on Sundays at the Rockville Centre Recreation Center. If anyone is interested in joining the group, or knows of an organization that can use the finished products, contact them at ncjwsouthshore.org.
