'Main' event causes deep problem Water pipe break interrupts Oceanside service for hours

The 12-inch main at Silver Lane and Magee Place ruptured on Monday morning, Sept. 20. Long Island American Water (LIAW) received word of the break at 8 a.m. and shut the pipeline down an hour later. Twenty residents were without water until 3 p.m. that day, when the repairs were completed.
In fixing a six-foot section of the main, workers opened a 10 x 10-foot hole in the street, and a larger portion of the road was reconstructed to help blend the temporarily patched area with the surrounding pavement.
"We're actually going to be reconstructing a little bit more, about 50 feet of the road," E.J. Penza, a spokeswoman for LIAW, told the Herald. "Once the pavement settles, then we'll do the permanent restoration."
Asked when the permanent repairs will be made, Penza said, "Perhaps a month or so, so that the fill settles." She added that the work would take a day or two to complete. "They shouldn't disrupt too much of the traffic in that area," she said.
LIAW has also begun to permanently repave a sidewalk and roadway along Lawson Boulevard, after the water company replaced 1,500 feet of 20-inch transmission main last spring along the west side of Lawson Boulevard, from Atlantic Avenue to Anchor Avenue. "They will have that completely done within the next couple of weeks," Penza said. She mentioned that among other repairs LIAW has planned in Oceanside is the installation of a new pipeline on Merrifield Avenue.
