Malverne Mel predicts an early spring in 2021

Between the nor’easter on Monday and social distancing guidelines, the Village of Malverne’s annual Groundhog Day with Malverne Mel looked a bit different this year. The event was held in front of Village Hall with no crowd on Tuesday morning and was livestreamed on Malverne TV as Malverne Mel made his prognostication.

Whispering into Malverne Mayor Keith Corbett’s blowhorn, he did not see his shadow and predicted an early spring. However, Mel seemed to be camera shy this year.

“Malverne Mel was very angry this morning,” Corbett said, as Mel refused to leave his warm home. “I think Covid-19 and mask wearing has gotten to him as much as the rest of us.”

Along with Corbett, Malverne Mel was joined by Deputy Mayor Perry Cuocci, Village Clerk Averil Smith, Village Trustees Tim Sullivan and Jack O’Brien, and former Deputy Mayor Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick.
