Malverne teacher named Educator of the Month

Virginia "Ginny" DeLeo, science research coordinator at Malverne High School, has been chosen as Long Island Educator of the Month by Hofstra University and Cablevision's News 12. School officials say DeLeo's accomplishments and letters of recommendation made her a clear favorite for this award.
"Ginny DeLeo is one of the most competent educators I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Her dedication and commitment to her students is second to none. She functions as both a research scientist as well as an outstanding teacher of students and curriculum, and uses both strengths to motivate her students to learn," said Peter Scordo, former superintendent of the Malverne School District, in his recommendation.
James Brown, Malverne High School's interim principal, also had words of praise.
"She is a consummate teacher and professional known for her excellent rapport with students, her willingness to take on challenging tasks and her ability to inspire and encourage her pupils," he said, and further credited DeLeo for initiating the high school's science research program three years ago, which literally "put Malverne on the map" in terms of science research. The program successfully produced an Intel Talent Search semi-finalist, described as a remarkable feat for a district entering the competition for the first time.
Some of the factors considered in choosing a candidate for this award include teaching excellence, extracurricular leadership, student mentoring, honors and awards received and professional leadership in the district. Area school administrators are asked to nominate teachers, after which Hofstra faculty members and new York State teachers jointly select candidates for this recognition.
DeLeo remains modest about her outstanding achievements.
"I enjoy working closely with the students and seeing how proud they are when they reach their goals," she said.
Video footage of DeLeo's classroom, students, colleagues, and a profile of the Malverne School District will be featured repeatedly on News 12 for one month. DeLeo will receive a commemorative plaque at a special reception for all monthly winners.
