Malverne woman killed by train

According to Fifth Squad detectives, Rosemary Tomasulo walked around the flashing gates at about 10 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 23 and apparently did not see the approaching eastbound train. The train was unable to stop and Tomasulo was killed.
Malverne Police Chief Glen Jacobsen said the fresh powder kicked up by winds may have contributed to Tomasulo's death. An off-duty Malverne police officer, John Cantanno, witnessed the accident and called out to the woman that a train was approaching, but his pleas were not heard. All the protective devices including pedestrian gate, flashing lights, warning bells and train horn were working at the time, he said.
"[Cantanno said] she had her head down and with her hand up shielded herself from the conditions and became temporarily disoriented," Jacobsen said.
Train service in the area was halted for about five hours.
