Police reported this week that a Roosevelt man has been charged in 18 of the burglaries committed during the rash of break-ins that occurred last year. Hundreds of Baldwin residents attended meetings with police after more than a dozen homeowners reported that burglars had entered their residences while they were home.
John Perry, 31, of Lincoln Avenue, Roosevelt, was arrested after First Squad Officer Pandolfo observed Perry in the rear yard of a home on Willowbrook Avenue, Freeport, on Sept. 25, 2000. Pandolfo, knowing of the numerous burglaries in the area, attempted to stop Perry, but, according to police, he fled eastbound through the rear yard.
Fellow Officer Shim observed the defendant changing his shirt on California Avenue. Shim stopped Perry and Pandolfo identified him as the same person he saw in the rear yard.
The next day, Perry's girlfriend was interviewed by police and she gave them a lady's wristwatch and a man's silver-colored necklace that she had received from him. Police discovered the wristwatch had been taken from an occupied burglary that occurred on Sept. 16 in Freeport.
Several homeowners identified Perry in a line-up conducted by Nassau County Police on Sept. 26.
In addition to the Baldwin burglaries, Perry was charged with 16 in the Freeport area and 10 in Roosevelt.
