Man killed in apparent road rage incident in Long Beach

A man was killed when he was run over in Long Beach on Friday morning, according to Nassau County Police.
According to a witness, the victim was driving east on West Park Avenue in a yellow Porsche at about 10:10 a.m. when he stopped near a black Nissan headed north on National Boulevard, got out of his car and pounded the hood of the Nissan stopped at a traffic light. The driver of the Nissan then drove over the man.
Other witnesses said the Nissan then made a U-turn and drove south on National Boulevard, where he was stopped by a pedestrian near West Walnut Street and arrested by Long Beach police.
Police officers at the scene were overheard saying the victim was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital. As of 2:45 p.m. on Friday, the hospital said it could not confirm whether the victim was being treated at the hospital, but Nassau County Police later confirmed that he had died.
"This is such a terrible tragedy," said City Manager Charles Theofan. "It's the first homicide in five years in Long Beach. These are the kinds of things we occasionally see on the nightly news, and you realize how foolish it is -- an argument at a traffic dispute to end with the loss of life. How sad, meaningless and foolish."
