The commemoration ceremony honors the victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, airline flight takeovers and the U.S. military service personnel who have died in the battle against terrorism.
We must not forget all of those who gave their lives for this great country, council vice-president Scott Nigro said.
Church bells and fire horns will be heard ringing at the exact times the incidents of Sept. 11, took place.
The commemoration ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the World Trade Center Memorial located in Fireman's Plaza on Park Avenue off of Lafayette Boulevard. Fire and police officials will place a ceremonial wreath at this site in tribute to all the rescue workers who selflessly gave their lives on Sept. 11.
The remembrance event will begin an hour later in Kennedy Plaza. During the event, the Joint Veterans Organization will place a ceremonial wreath at the Veteran's Memorial Wall. All are invited to attend.
Meanwhile, all Long Island residents are invited to Point Lookout Park earlier that morning at 8:30 a.m. for an open air ecumenical program. The program is open to all those in Nassau-Suffolk region who wish to participate in a meaningful program of observance in a place where Long Islanders have consistently sought solace, our beaches.
The observance will include remarks from members of the clergy, a program by noted college artist Amy Cohen and a silent vigil beside the waters of the Atlantic.
In addition, several local houses of worship will be hosting services and remembrances of the attack.
n The Brahms Requiem will be sung by the St. Ignatius Choral Society at a free memorial concert on the first anniversary of the nearly 3,000 innocent and heroic lives lost in the terrorist attacks. The Brahms Requiem will be presented in its full orchestration under the direction of Dr. Denis Nicholson. The performance is Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 8 p.m. in the St. Ignatius Martyr R.C. Church. For more information, call 432-6668. Also, a Wednesday, Sept. 11, mass will be held at 8 a.m.
n The People's Church, located at 111 Delaware Ave., will hold a special memorial service on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. to honor the victims of 9/11.
n The St. James of Jerusalem Episcopal Church, located at 220 W. Penn St., will be holding open prayers on Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
n The Our Lady of Miraculous Medal, located at 75 Parkside Dr. Point Lookout, will hold a special memorial service on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 9 a.m.
n The St. Mary of the Isle Roman Catholic Church, located at 315 E. Walnut St., will hold a special memorial service on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8 with a vigil of candles and photos of all the victims of Sept. 11. In a basket, the names of each victim will be distributed to churchgoers asking for a prayer for the victim and their family. On Sept. 11, a mass will be held at 9 a.m. and holy cards with God Bless America pins will be handed out. At 7:30 p.m., a bilingual service will be held and holy cards and pins will also be handed out. Following the mass, a flashlight walk to the boardwalk will be held, followed by a prayer.
n St. John's Lutheran Church will hold an open prayer beginning at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Special services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 15, at 10:30 a.m.
n Young Israel of Long Beach, located at 120 Long Beach Blvd., will hold a memorial service on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. to remember the innocent lives lost on Sept. 11.
n Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Island Park will hold an open memorial service to honor the victims of Sept. 11 on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m.
n Rabbi Daniel Mehlman of the Lido Beach Synagogue, located at 1 Fairway Rd., will be dedicating his Rosh Hashana sermon, Turn 9/11 into a living experience, on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7:45 a.m. to the lost lives of Sept. 11. A memorial service for 9/11 will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 8 p.m.
n On Sunday, Sept. 8, the Islamic Center of Long Island, located at 835 Brush Hollow Rd in Westbury, will hold a memorial for victims of Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Wednesday, Sept. 11, the Council of Islamic American Relations will request that all mosques implement an open house policy.
