In Long Beach, city officials, police officers and firefighters, and local veterans will gather in Kennedy Plaza in front of City Hall at 8:30 a.m. At 8:46 a.m., there will be a moment of silence and the flag will be lowered to half staff, followed by the sounding of fire horns in remembrance of those who died after American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
At 9:03 a.m., the horns will sound again in remembrance of those who died after United Airlines Flight 175 hit the South Tower. The horns will sound again at 9:43 a.m. and 10:13 a.m., marking the times of the attack on the Pentagon and the crash of Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pa.
Wreaths will be places at the 9/11 Heroes Memorial that stands on West Park Avenue near Lafayette Boulevard and at the West End Garden of Remembrance at Beech Street and Virginia Avenue.
In Point Lookout, the Town of Hempstead will host a sunrise memorial at 7 a.m. The service will feature a World Trade Center sand monument created by award-winning sculptors.
Those in attendance will be invited to write messages on sand dollars to those who perished in the terrorist attacks. The sand dollars, replete with messages, will then be placed at the base of the monument during the service. The ceremony will also include remarks from members of the clergy and a silent vigil by the waters of the Atlantic.
