Speakers before the 150 dinner guests praised Murray for his deep dedication to family, faith and community. For what is supposed to be a part time job, they say Murray can always be found in his office early in the morning, after attending Mass, and that stays well into the afternoon and frequently works at night. What truly sets him apart, they said, is that he always finds an opportunity to sit down and comfort people who come in for help, which happens more frequently than most people in the village know, and assist them in any possible way.
Trustee Wayne Lipton said, "He helps others with a kindness and purity of heart that makes him my hero."
Rabbi Dr. Barry Dov Schwartz of B'nai Sholom called Mayor Murray "a man of charity and high values in helping people."
Everyone said that 60 years of service is an amazing accomplishment.
Murray received citations from Nassau County and the Town of Hempstead . Rabbi Schwartz presented him with a shofar, a ram's horn, that he said is significant in both the Jewish and Christian traditions.
