Around town    
Food drive
The Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead is hosting a Food Drive all year long. The center is asking Long Islanders for non-perishable food products in order to help fill the depleted inventory in area food pantries. Drop off your donations to the center, 711 Dogwood Avenue, near the entrance at the side door. Each time the bin is full, the food will immediately be donated. Anniversary celebration
The West Hempstead Fire Department will celebrate its 90th Anniversary this month with several events. A Firematic Drill will be held on Friday, June 19 at the Brian D. Fahey Training Center on Weir Street in Hempstead. A parade will be held on Saturday, June 20 starting on Hempstead Avenue near the West Hempstead Public Library at 6 p.m. The parade will end at the fire house with a block party, which will include refreshments, a DJ and activities for children. Matinee Movie
An afternoon movie will be shown every Monday at 2 p.m. Schedule is as follows: “The Day the Earth Stood Still” on June 22 and “Seven Pounds” on June 29.
Movie for the kids
A children’s movie for kids ages 3 and older will be shown every Wednesday in July at 2 p.m. Schedule is as follows: “Tale of Despereaux“ on July 8, “Bedtime Stories” on July 15 and “The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning” on July 22.
Defensive Driving Class
A Defensive Driving Class for people of all ages will be held on Saturday, June 27 from 9:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The cost is $45, which must be paid at time of registration by a check or money order made payable to the course instructor, John Gibbone.
Kick-off party
A Summer Reading Club Kick-off Party will be held on Tuesday, June 30 from 4 to 5 p.m. Children of all ages can come to the library to sing, dance and play musical instruments with Darlene Graham and her guitar in this high-energy, interactive program.
Pre-School Storytime
A Pre-School Storytime will be held on Mondays, July 13 and 20 at 2 p.m. Children ages 3 1/2 to 5, who are not starting kindergarten, can come to the library to enjoy some stories just for them.
Teen Chess Workshop
A Teen Chess Workshop for All Levels will be held on Monday, July 13 from 7 to 8 p.m. There will be two session for teens ages 10 to 18. The second session will be held on Aug. 3.
Tie-Dyeing
A Tie-Dyeing class will be held on Thursday, July 16 at 2:30 p.m. Come tie-dye a shirt (or pillow case, etc)! You supply the item and the library will supply the rest. For children ages 3 and older accompanied by an adult.
Teen Photo Workshop
A Teen Photo Workshop will be held on Monday, July 20 from 7 to 8 p.m. This class is for teens in sixth grade and up. Come and get a free disposable camera and some valuable tips from professional photographer and Malverne resident Susan Grieco.

Yoga
A Yoga class will be held on Thursdays, June 18 and 25 from noon to 1:15 p.m. Joe Cilmi will teach yoga poses and breathing techniques.
Come get a manicure
A Nail Manicure program will be held on Thursday, June 18 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Learn how to manicure, decorate and care for your nails. The cost is $5.
Defensive Driving
An AARP Defensive Driving course will be held on Monday, June 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30p.m. Drivers over 50 can take this two-day driving course. The class continues on Monday, June 29. The cost is $12 per person.
Knit and Crochet
A Knit and Crochet program will be held on Tuesday, June 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost is $1.
Come and dance
A Belly Dancing class will be held on Monday, June 29, Wednesday, July 1 and Tuesday, July 7 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Want to learn how to belly dance? The cost is $20 and it must be payable by check.
Kick-off party
The library will host a Summer Reading Kick-off Party on Monday, June 29 at 1:30 p.m. Children ages 4-9 can come to our Summer Reading Club kick-off and see wonderful balloon creations.
Be your own boss
A Teen Boss program will be held on Monday, June 29 from 3 to 4 p.m. Come and learn how to start your own business.
Storytime for the kids
A Pajama Storytime for kids 3 to 5 will be held on Monday, July 6 from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Come stories, songs and a craft. Bring your teddy bear, a grown-up and wear your pajamas.
Playdough fun
A Playdough Play program will be held on Tuesday, July 7 from 10 to 11 a.m. Children ages 3 & 4 can have fun making shapes with fingers or cookie cutters.
Spanish-English storytime
A Spanish-English Storytime will be held on Tuesday, July 7 from 7 to 7:45 p.m. Children aged 3-6 can join the library for stories, songs and a craft. Parents are welcome as well.
Tie-Dying
A Tie-Dying class will be held on Thursday, July 9 at 7 p.m. Children in grades 4 and 5 can learn the craft of tie-dying and make a shirt all on their own. The cost is $2.

Kids in the kitchen
A Kids in the Kitchen program will be held on Saturday, June 20 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Kids ages 7 to 12 can test out their culinary skills and prepare something that they can take home.
Orientation
Teen volunteers must attend one of the following orientations/training sessions: Monday, June 22 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. or Tuesday June 30 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Toddler Nights
Toddlers ages 2 to 6 can come to the library with their parents for a special program on Wednesday, June 24 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Women’s health
A Breast Health and You program will be held on Thursday, June 25 at 6:45 p.m. Get answers to how and why breast exams are important. Also learn how to do a self exam.
Mental Health Seminar
A Mental Health Seminar will be held on Tuesday, June 30 at 6:45 p.m. Join the library as it discusses information from the National Alliance on Mental Health.

Our Lady of Lourdes Church’s
thrift shop, located at Park Boulevard and Sheehy Place in Malverne, is open on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and on the first Saturdays of the month from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For more information, call (516) 599-1269.
