Food drive
The Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead is hosting a Food Drive all year long. The center is asking Long Islanders for non-perishable food products in order to help fill the depleted inventory in area food pantries. Drop off your donations to the center, 711 Dogwood Avenue, near the entrance at the side door. Each time the bin is full, the food will immediately be donated. Gardens of Malverne Tour
The Malverne Merchants and Professional Association will host the Secret Gardens of Malverne Tour 2009 on Saturday, June 13 from 12 to 4 p.m. This will be a walking tour and garden tea party. The proceeds will benefit the Malverne Merchants Beautification Project. Tickets are $25 and $30 the day of the tour. Anniversary parade
The Lakeview Fire Department will celebrate its 100 year anniversary with a parade on Saturday, June 13 at 6 p.m. The parade, which will feature nearly 50 fire departments in Nassau and Suffolk counties, will run along Woodfield Road to Eagle Avenue and end at Hempstead Lake Park. The Malverne Historical Societys annual Birthday Party will be held on Sunday, June 14 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Anniversary celebration
The West Hempstead Fire Department will celebrate its 90th Anniversary this month with several events. A Firematic Drill will be held on Friday, June 19 at the Brian D. Fahey Training Center on Weir Street in Hempstead. A parade will be held on Saturday, June 20 starting on Hempstead Avenue near the West Hempstead Public Library at 6 p.m. The parade will end at the fire house with a block party, which will include refreshments, a DJ and activities for children. An afternoon movie will be shown every Monday at 2 p.m. Schedule is as follows: Bride Wars on June 15, The Day the Earth Stood Still on June 22 and Seven Pounds on June 29.
Movie for the kids
A childrens movie for kids ages 3 and older will be shown every Wednesday in July at 2 p.m. Schedule is as follows: Tale of Despereaux on July 8, Bedtime Stories on July 15 and The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning on July 22.
Defensive Driving Class
A Defensive Driving Class for people of all ages will be held on Saturday, June 27 from 9:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The cost is $45, which must be paid at time of registration by a check or money order made payable to the course instructor, John Gibbone.
Kick-off party
A Summer Reading Club Kick-off Party will be held on Tuesday, June 30 from 4 to 5 p.m. Children of all ages can come to the library to sing, dance and play musical instruments with Darlene Graham and her guitar in this high-energy, interactive program.
Pre-School Storytime
A Pre-School Storytime will be held on Monday, July 13 at 2 p.m. Children ages 3 1/2 to 5, who are not starting kindergarten, can come to the library to enjoy some stories just for them.
Teen Chess Workshop
A Teen Chess Workshop for All Levels will be held on Monday, July 13 from 7 to 8 p.m. There will be two session for teens ages 10 to 18. The second session will be held on Aug. 3.

A Knit and Crochet program will be held on Tuesdays, June 16 and 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost is $1.
Come get a manicure
A Nail Manicure program will be held on Thursday, June 18 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Learn how to manicure, decorate and care for your nails. The cost is $5.
Defensive Driving
An AARP Defensive Driving course will be held on Monday, June 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30p.m. Drivers over 50 can take this two-day driving course. The class continues on Monday, June 29. The cost is $12 per person.
Kick-off party
The library will host a Summer Reading Kick-off Party on Monday, June 29 at 1:30 p.m. Children ages 4-9 can come to our Summer Reading Club kick-off and see wonderful balloon creations.
