Around town ���
Food drive
The Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead is hosting a Food Drive all year long. The center is asking Long Islanders for non-perishable food products in order to help fill the depleted inventory in area food pantries. Drop off your donations to the center, 711 Dogwood Avenue, near the entrance at the side door. Each time the bin is full, the food will immediately be donated. Clothing Drive
The Boy Scout Troop 24 will be collecting used clothes for the Vietnam Veterans of America on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please bring clothing to the church basement of Our Lady of Lourdes. Open House
The St. Thomas the Apostle School in West Hempstead will host its Pre-school Open House and Family Festival on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31. Open House for any child that will be eligible for pre-school in September will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on both days and the festival will begin at 2 p.m. on both days. Visit the Open House session and upon completion of the visit, you will receive one free child pay one price wristband and a free hot dog and drink.
Gardens of Malverne Tour
The Malverne Merchants and Professional Association will host the Secret Gardens of Malverne Tour 2009 on Saturday, June 13 from 12 to 4 p.m. This will be a walking tour and garden tea party. The proceeds will benefit the Malverne Merchants Beautification Project. Tickets are $25 and $30 the day of the tour. Matinee Movie
An afternoon movie will be shown every Monday at 2 p.m. Schedule is as follows: �Last Chance Harvey� on June 1, �The Curious Case of Benjamin Button� on June 8, �Bride Wars� on June 15, �The Day the Earth Stood Still� on June 22 and �Seven Pounds� on June 29.
Barbershop Quartet to perform
The Barbershop Quartet will perform on Tuesday, June 2 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Come and see them perform.
Father�s Day craft
A Roger Rooster Father�s Day Craft will be held on Tuesday, June 9 from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Come make a Roger Rooster Clipboard with Jeanne Hall just in time for Father's Day. If children choose not to use the precut Dad letters, this craft makes a special gift for grandfathers as well. This program is for children ages 2 1/2 through 5, who are not in kindergarten yet.
Defensive Driving Class
A Defensive Driving Class for people of all ages will be held on Saturday, June 27 from 9:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The cost is $45, which must be paid at time of registration by a check or money order made payable to the course instructor, John Gibbone.
Kick-off party
A Summer Reading Club Kick-off Party will be held on Tuesday, June 30 from 4 to 5 p.m. Children of all ages can come to the library to sing, dance and play musical instruments with Darlene Graham and her guitar in this high-energy, interactive program.

Playtime for the kids
Kids ages 1 to 3 can stop by the library to play on Thursdays, May 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Yoga
A Yoga class will be held on Thursdays, May 28 and June 4 and 11 from noon to 1:15 p.m. Joe Cilmi will teach yoga poses and breathing techniques.

A Parenting and Playtime program will be held on Wednesday, June 3 from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m.
Pajama storytime
Children ages 3 to 5 can join the library for a Pajama Storytime on Monday, June 1 from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Enjoy stories, songs and a craft. Bring your teddy bear, a grown-up and wear pajamas.
Come and dance
A Belly Dancing class will be held on Mondays, June 1 and 8 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Want to learn how to belly dance? The cost is $20 and it must be payable by check.
Learn about the stars
An Astronomy Workshop will be held on Tuesday, June 2 at 7 p.m. Astronomer Kevin Manning will present a hands-on program.
Parent Workshop
A Parent Workshop will be held on Tuesday, June 2 from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. Parents can come to this parenting workshop on increasing appropriate behavior in children with autism and other developmental disorders.
Paint your T-Shirt
A Painted T-Shirt program will be held on Thursday, June 4 from 7 to 8 p.m. Come and transform a plain white T-shirt into a cool and colorful garment.
Interactive learning
A Nintendo Wii program will be held on Sunday, June 7 from 2 to 3 p.m. Children fourth and fifth grade can come to the library to enjoy Wii Sports-Bowling.
Father�s Day activity
A Father�s Day Fish program will be held on Tuesday, June 9 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade can make a colorful fish on a pole for their father or special grown-up.
Knit and Crochet
A Knit and Crochet program will be held on Tuesday, June 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost is $1.

A Summer Volunteer Recruitment Day for teens will be held on Monday, June 8 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The library is looking for teen volunteers to help contribute to its summer programming and reading club.
Career Development Seminar
A Career Development Seminar will be held on Thursday, June 11 at 6:45 p.m. This program will educate working professionals, job seekers and anyone in career transition to the current strategies and techniques to obtaining employment in today�s economy.

A Saving Your Home Seminar will be held on Tuesday, June 16 at 6:45 p.m. Lornell Brown of Guyasamin Funding Solutions will share information on how to obtain an agreement that will stop all foreclosure action and allow you to obtain an affordable payment agreement.
