Around town    
Food drive
The Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead is hosting a Food Drive all year long. The center is asking Long Islanders for non-perishable food products in order to help fill the depleted inventory in area food pantries. Drop off your donations to the center, 711 Dogwood Avenue, near the entrance at the side door. Each time the bin is full, the food will immediately be donated. Ab Crunch Challenge
The Lady of America in West Hempstead will host its annual Ab Crunch Challenge on Saturday, March 28 at 11 a.m. The event is held each year to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Earth Hour in W.H.
Residents in West Hempstead and the surrounding community will meet in front of the West Hempstead Post Office on Saturday, March 28 at 8:30 p.m. as a part of its participate in Earth Hour. On this evening, individuals around the world will show a collective concern about climate change by turning off all the lights, TVs, radios, etc., in their homes from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. For more information, e-mail jvaron613@aim.com.
Easter Egg Hunt
The West Hempstead Lions Club will host an Easter Egg Hunt for kids 9 and under on Saturday, April 4 at 11 a.m. There will be games, raffles and more.
Music concert
The Malverne Historical and Preservation Society will host An Afternoon of Music program on Sunday, April 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. Singers Christine Solimeno and Peter Rapanaro will perform. There will be raffles and refreshments. The cost is $5 for admission.

Matinee Movie
An afternoon movie will be shown every Monday at 2 p.m. Schedule is as follows: “The Secret Life of Bees” on March 30, “Swing Vote” on April 6, “Lakeview Terrace” on April 13, “Australia” on April 20 and “Fireproof” on April 27.
Jump for Joy
A Jump for Joy program will be held on Friday, March 27. Session one for kids 18 to 36 months will be from 10:15 to 11 a.m. and session two for kids 18 months to 5 will be from 11:15 a.m. to noon. The cost is $30.
SAT practice test
Kaplan Test Prep will give a free four-hour SAT exam on Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is only a practice test, so the scores will not be reported. Students will receive their scores and SAT test secrets during a seminar at the library on Tuesday, April 7 at 7 p.m.
Tax class
Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin will visit the library on Tuesday, March 31 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Clavin will address any tax concerns and questions that residents have.
Yoga for Kids
A Wingspan Yoga for Kids program for kids in third through fifth grade will be held on Wednesdays, April 1 and 8 from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Interested six graders can register on a waiting list.
Rock Band
A Rock Band 2 for Teens program for kids in sixth through 12 grade will be held on Monday, April 6 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Jewelry program
Registration for a Teen Jewelry program on Tuesday, May 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. will begin on Monday, April 6.
Kids movie
The Children’s Movie “Bolt” will be shown on Tuesday, April 14 at 2 p.m.
Science class
A Sonic Sounds with Mad Science of Long Island program for kids in kindergarten through third grade will be held on Wednesday, April 15 at 2 p.m. Discover sound, sound waves and the way household items can be used to create movie effects in this hands-on workshop.
Storytime for the families
A Pajama Storytime for Families with children ages 3 to 8 will be held on Wednesday, April 15 from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

SAT workshop
A SAT Workshop will be held on Thursday, March 26 from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. Taking the S.A.T. in May? Sign up for this six-week course to help you prepare. The cost is $80.
Infants and Parents
An Infants and Parents program will be held on Fridays, March 27 and April 3 from 10 to 11 a.m. Join the library’s specialist who will guide you and your baby, ages 1-12 months, in bonding, massage and play.
Tax help for senior citizens
An AARP Tax Help class will be held on Tuesdays, March 31 and April 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will assist low-income senior citizens in preparing simple tax returns. To schedule an appointment, please call the library’s Reference Desk.
Exercise class
An Exercise Class will be held on Tuesdays, March 31 and April 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Knit and Crochet
A Knit and Crochet program will be held on Tuesday, March 31 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Poetry Month Celebration
A Poetry Collage program for kids in third through fifth grade will be held on Wednesday, April 1 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Children can celebrate Poetry Month by creating some poetry of their own. Bring a pencil and paper.

A G.E.D. Seminar will be held on Tuesday, March 31 at 6:45 p.m. This program will address all the questions about getting your GED.

An Income Tax class prepared by Volunteer Income Tax Preparers will be held on Monday, March 30 at 2 p.m.
Computer class
Computer Fourth and Fifth Grade for Adults will be held on Saturday, April 4 at 10 a.m. This class will discuss the Windows environment, continued emphasis on pop up menus and properties, searching, creating shortcuts and more.
Movies for the kids
Children ages 8 to 12 can enjoy movies on Wednesdays, April 1 and 15 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Musical Recital
A Musical Recital will be held on Saturday, April 4 at 2 p.m. Local young students will perform classical, gospel and jazz music.
Tax class
