Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education meet on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. at Sewanhaka High School, 500 Tulip Ave., Floral Park.


Franklin Square District Board of Education has a budget work session scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 8 p.m. at John Street School, 560 Nassau Blvd., Franklin Square.

Breakfast with Santa.


The Franklin Square Seniors Kiwanis Club is hosting a "Pancake Breakfast with Santa" fund-raiser on Sunday, Dec. 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Franklin Square Senior Center, 1182 Martha Pl. "Breakfast with Santa" is open to all children and adults. The cost of the breakfast is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 10. There will be raffle and prizes.


Open doors for pet adoption.


It's time again for "Home for the Holidays Pet Adoption Program," and Town of Hempstead is waiving the adoption fee and rabies shot fee through Jan. 7.Stop by the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter on 3320 Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh or call 516- 785-5220. The town's adoption hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The facility has a separate greeting room where families can interact with an animal during the selection process. People who choose to adopt will provide you with pet care literature and pet food samples.To view some of the town's adoptable pets online, people can visit Petfinder.com, the oldest and largest searchable directory of adoptable pets on the Web.


Party hall available for rent.


The Wesley United Methodist Church hall is available for rent on evenings or weekends for up to 150 guests. The cost of the hall is $400, or $450 for use of the kitchen. Perfect for birthdays, Christenings, etc. No smoking or alcohol permitted. Wesley United Methodist Church is located at 619 Fenworth Blvd., Franklin Square. Town seeks VITA volunteers.


The Town of Hempstead is seeking volunteers to participate in its annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). Now entering its 31st year, the VITA Program is sponsored by the Town of Hempstead's Department of Senior Enrichment under the auspices of the Internal Revenue Service. Through the VITA program, volunteers are trained and assigned to town senior centers and local libraries to assist seniors in the preparation of their federal and state income tax returns. Those interested in becoming a VITA volunteer should contact the Department of Senior Enrichment at (516) 485-8100, extension 273.

The library invites young patrons to play some board games and have some fun on Friday afternoons from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. All are welcome.


Creative nonfiction writing.


In this workshop with Dominick Tringali, Sr., learn the value of writing a sharp note for quick results (for closure) by doing it yourself. Join him on Tuesdays, Dec.20 & 27 at 2 p.m.


Poetry writing workshop.


Dr. Linda Opyr is the author of five collections of poetry that have been published in numerous journals and magazines. Join her on Wednesday, Dec. 21 from 3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m. Participants in the workshop will have the opportunity to write poetry and share what they've written. Bring paper and pen and the desire to expand your knowledge and enjoyment of writing good poems.


Grandparents support group.


Every month, grandparents gather to share experiences and recognize when and how to intervene, under the guidance of social worker Sari Flesch of the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs. Join Flesch on Friday, Dec. 16 at 9:30 a.m. and take part in the ongoing open discussion group. Coffee and cookies served. Children from Meacham Child Care will entertain Seniors with holiday cheer and a fun show at 11:30 a.m. Come in and see the children entertain with holiday spirit.

Led by RSVP volunteer instructors Isabel Batson, Juana Thornhill and assistants Millie Danko and Shigeko Watanabe, chair exercise classes are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 16 at 10 a.m .
