Memorable quotes

Instead, much to my delight, I found a treasure chest of interesting material that I saved, I see now, for good reason. One of the things that I found were quotes that I thought were worth saving. For me, these quotes have stood the test of time. I hope you find them as meaningful as I do. I've taken the liberty of adding an additional thought to each one. Eleanor Roosevelt tops my list with the following 3 quotes:

"Remember, no one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

(If you believe that someone is making you feel stupid or inadequate, notice how you are buying into that belief.")

"You have not only the right to be an individual, you have an obligation to be one. You cannot make any useful contribution in life unless you do this."

(If you are proud of what you do, others will come around to appreciate it-some sooner, some later.)

"Happiness is not a goal, it is a by-product."

(Instead of seeking happiness directly, get involved with things you care about and people you respect and care for, and notice how much happier you feel.)

"All progress has resulted from people who took unpopular positions." - Adlai Stevenson.

(High school may be a popularity contest, but life is not. Don't live your life as though you're still in high school.)

"It is the individual who knows how little he knows about himself who stands a reasonable chance of finding out something about himself before he dies." - S.I. Hayakawa

(What you know about yourself is only the tip of the iceberg. Be open to new ways of viewing and interpreting your own behavior.)

"I've never been poor, only broke. Being poor is a frame of mind. Being broke is only a temporary situation." - Mike Todd

(Attitude influences everything. Some wealthy people are always complaining about not having enough money while some people with very limited means feel quite satisfied with what they have.)

"You must learn day by day to broaden your horizons. The more things you love, the more you are interested in, the more you are indignant about, the more you have when anything happens." - Ethel Barrymore

(As people get older, they often suffer the loss of friends, family members, jobs, opportunities. Continuing to develop new friendships, interests and skills will keep you feeling vital and engaged in life.)

"If there is nothing wrong in the world, there wouldn't be anything for us to do." - George Bernard Shaw

(Get passionate about something that troubles you and become involved. You may not be able to change the world, but you can certainly fix one little part of it.") Linda Sapadin, Ph.D. is a psychologist in private practice who offers individual, couple and family therapy. ©Copyright 2002
