Sunrise memorial
The Town of Hempstead will be hosting a special sunrise memorial program at Town Park Point Lookout. The beachfront ceremony will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 a.m.
Those in attendance will be invited to participate in an interactive program, writing messages, reflections or thoughts on a special memento provided by the town. The messages will then be placed at the base of an ice monument created by the award-winning sculptors of Ice Sculpture Designs Inc.
Honoring through art
South Nassau Communities Hospital's World Trade Center Family Center will exhibit 45 pieces of children's art, ranging from water color to crayon to papier-mch, at the Chelsea Terrapin Art Gallery, 121 West 15th St. in New York City, Sept. 7 through Sept. 13, from noon until 7 p.m.
The World Trade Center Family Center is a free program that has provided counseling support services to more than 800 adults and 400 children who lost loved ones on 9/11.
The exhibit features a three-year collection of art comprising drawings and paintings created by children who lost parents on 9/11.
The World Trade Center Family Center, a non-profit organization that offers support to families who lost loved ones in the tragedy, provides art therapy, creative play, special learning events and crafts to help children express feelings of grief.
South Nassau established the program to meet the needs of members of the community. Shortly after the attack, area residents in crisis turned to South Nassau Communities Hospital when many of their loved ones did not come home from work that day. The hospital's behavioral health staff counseled and comforted the community and continues to serve those who are still suffering.
