All of the hair donations were sent to the Pantene Pro-V Beautiful Lengths Campaign, which makes free wigs for women who have lost their hair during cancer treatment.
Mepham volunteers also had their heads shaved and collected pledges for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to funding children's cancer research. As a school, Mepham High raised more than $38,000 for St. Baldrick's and donated 60 ponytails to Pantene. More than 140 Mepham students took part in the event.
Bellmore-Merrick schools raised $150,000 during the Central District's first-ever community-wide fund-raiser to benefit childhood cancer research and Camp Adventure, a camp for children suffering from cancer, as chronicled in last week's story, "Central District steps up." Mepham's event organizers included teachers Marie Netto, Marybeth Burke and Maura Valdner, who served as organizers of and major contributors to the Central District effort to raise funds for St. Baldrick's and Chop Your Locks.
