Mepham grads urged to take risks, remember values

Graduates of Mepham High School were reminded on June 24 of the impact they have already made on their own community, and urged to continue to impact the people in their lives.

During the school’s 80 th commencement ceremony at the NYCB Theatre in Westbury, first-year Principal Eric Gomez told students to keep seeking their purpose.

“Think about what you are going to do with this chapter,” Gomez said. “As you reflect, your experiences will certainly help define you. However, very little will happen unless you are willing to take some risks.

Salutatorian Isabelle Chan said that her friendships — some of which have lasted since elementary school — enriched her Mepham experience, and the school as a whole.

“Mepham High School has forever been made better because you were here,” Chan said. “Each and every one of us has made a mark on the hallowed halls and in the hearts of one another that will forever, resonate and be remembered for years after we close our lockers for the last time.”

Valedictorian and Class President Gina Connors, meanwhile, said memories were important to keep, but change also needs to come.

“We have always been a united class and we constantly take pride in our school,” Connors said. “It is now up to us to take advantage of the opportunities that life offers us.”

Board of Education Trustee Nina Lanci reminded graduates to stay true to themselves. “What should never change is what makes you the person you are,” she said. “Your ideals, your values, your heart. Those should always remain a constant.”
