Tom Ryan, a Mepham senior, was diagnosed with a brain tumor last June. Now he must undergo treatment in Boston. He flies out regularly, putting a heavy financial burden on his family, which already faces staggering medical bills because Tom's older sister recently received a liver transplant from their father.
Mepham students, alumni, parents, teachers and administrators took part in the walk-a-thon, which raised $8,450 for the Ryan family. The Runner's Edge in Farmingdale donated T-shirts for the event. Cross-country runners Amy Kilgallin and Dawn Leavy chaired the fund-raiser, and SADD presidents Joanna Murphy and Elena Cucci played major roles in organizing the event.
Anyone interested in donating to the "Ryan Family Fund" may send checks to Mepham High School, c/o Barbara Gai, SADD adviser, 2401 Camp Ave., Bellmore, N.Y. 11710.
