The state meet comprised five races, each with 100 competitors. The top 20 girls in each race were named All-State. Leavy placed 17th in Class A, running the 3.1-mile course in a solid 19 minutes, 44 seconds. "I was thrilled," said Leavy, who was ranked 25th statewide in Class A coming into the title meet.
Race conditions were difficult. The course was muddy, and a light snow coated the ground. The temperature dropped to 28 degrees. "I think I run better in the cold," said Leavy.
Mepham runner Courtney Kelly placed 25th in the championship race. Previously, she was ranked 34th statewide in Class A. Kelly, a freshman, started running on the varsity team while still at Grand Avenue Middle School. Of the state race, she said, "It was a tough course. We all did our best there. We all had a great time."
She added, "I'm looking forward to the years to come."
