Mepham's alternative Homecoming

Posted
All appeared right with Mepham's world as the school held a Homecoming parade up Bedford Avenue in the heart of Bellmore, followed by a Community Day at the school, replete with activities like pie-eating contests.
For the parade, there were, of course, floats. Seniors dressed up in Halloween costumes and showered the crowds with confetti and candy. The marching band played, and cheerleaders cheered. Even Mepham Principal John Didden, who has been criticized in the media and by some local parents, was seen smiling as he led the parade through town. He was joined by district Superintendent Thomas Caramore, school board Trustee Janet Goller (a Mepham alumna), and district spokeswoman Kate Collins.
TV and newspaper journalists were everywhere, recording the event, but this time, no one seemed to mind. On Monday, a Kansas hate group would arrive to stage a protest outside Mepham High. But for a while on Saturday, Mepham students got the chance to have a little carefree fun.
