Merchants: Shop locally this holiday season

In a joint chambers of commerce news conference at the Merrick dress shop Queen of Hearts last Thursday, business owners from around Long Island, joined by Nassau County Legislators Dave Denenberg and Dennis Dunne, espoused the merits of purchasing goods from local merchants.
"These are the people that really give back," said Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce President E. Christopher Murray of local business owners, who often put money back into communities by donating to organizations such as youth sports teams.
Given the foundering economy, speakers made appropriately timed reminders of the added value of local commerce. "We all need tax relief," said Denenberg, pointing out that shopping where you live is a practical decision. "Let's think about setting the tone and shopping at home, and keeping our money right here in our district."
Business owners echoed sentiments that local trade is often favorable for consumers. When community groups ask for donations, "anyone who is my client, I say yes to," said Doug Mills, owner of Printing Emporium on Merrick Avenue, just north of Queen of Hearts. In tight financial times, the customers that drive his business win out, he said, adding, "You have to draw a line somewhere, and I say we are going to support our town and our clients."
"Our elected officials have been pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into our downtown areas," said Julie Marchesella, liaison officer and past president of the Merrick Chamber of Commerce and owner of Queen of Hearts. "Please remember us [in the downtowns] and avoid the malls. It's a safe place to shop."
