It's not critical whether you did. What is important is that Altman was teaching Merrick Avenue seventh-graders how to skateboard properly -- and safely. The idea behind the skateboarding unit is to prevent riding injuries.
Merrick Avenue recently became the first school in Nassau County to offer skateboarding as a phys. ed. unit, and Saul Lerner, the Bellmore-Merrick Central District health and phys. ed. director, said he couldn't be more pleased.
The Herald was there to catch the action as Merrick Avenue students took their first sweet rides, to use the skateboarders' jargon.
