The 11 girls on the squad practiced six days a week since June 18 in preparation for the big game.
Their summer season began on July 7 with a 12-3 win over last year's district championship team from the North Bellmore-North Merrick Little League. On July 8, the Merrick girls defeated Massapequa 14-1. Seaford was their next opponent, and Merrick once again was victorious with a 17-0 win.
With an undefeated record, the girls moved into the district finals. Four teams were eliminated from the tournament, and Merrick faced a tough North Bellmore-North Merrick squad for the championship. It was a tight game, but Merrick continued its winning streak with a 5-1 victory and claimed the District 31 Championship banner.
Dave Marcello and Don Calagna served as the coaches, and Lou Eiler as the manager. The Merrick girls were scheduled to continue their quest for the New York state championship on July 25, after press time, when they were to battle for the Long Island title.
