Keep the humidity level in your home between 40 and 60 percent

Use an air conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months and in damp spaces such as basements.

Make sure your home has enough ventilation. Use exhaust fans that vent outside in your kitchen and bathroom, and make sure your clothes dryer vents outside your home.
n
Promptly fix leaky roofs, windows and pipes so that mold does not receive enough moisture to grow.
n
Thoroughly clean and dry your home within 24 to 48 hours after flooding.
n
Before painting, add mold inhibitors to paints.
n
Use mold-killing products when cleaning bathrooms.
n
Remove or replace carpets and upholstery that have been soaked and cannot be dried promptly.
n
Avoid using carpet in rooms or areas that may have a lot of moisture.
Eliminating Mold After Flooding
n
Place moist items wet for two or more days outside. (Items wet for more than two days have mold growing on them.)Remove items made of cloth, unless they can be washed in hot water.
n
Remove items that can't be cleaned easily such as leather, paper, wood and carpets.
n
Use bleach to clean mold off hard surfaces, including floors, stoves, sinks, certain toys, countertops, flatware, plates and tools.
Safe Cleaning Techniques:

Never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners.
n
Wear rubber boots, rubber gloves, goggles and N-95 mask.
n
When using bleach, open windows and doors to allow fresh air in.
n
Mix one cup of bleach in one gallon of water.
n
Wash items with the bleach and water mixture.
n
Scrub rough surfaces with a stiff brush.
n
Rinse the item with clean water.
n

Winthrop children's Cancer Center to hold "Comedy Night"
Winthrop-University Hospital's Cancer Center for Kids in Mineola will host "Laughs to Cure Cancer" at the Jericho Terrace on Friday, March 24 from 7 p.m. until midnight. Social skills group at North Shore
In an effort to help ease the burden of parents with shy children who lack social skills, the Anxiety and Stress Treatment program at North Shore University Hospital in Manhassett is offering a new treatment group, The group will focus on social skills and anxiety-reducing skills for shy children, ages 10-12, utilizing group interaction and sharing of experiences.Seven sessions will be held on Monday evenings from 5-6 p.m. beginning Feb. 6.
