On July 25, approximately 90 people gathered on the grassy grounds of St. Anthony’s parish for the parish’s first ever Outdoor Movie Night. Kids, parents, friends and extended families spread themselves around on blankets and lawn chairs, enjoying the slight breeze that made for a bug-free, comfortable evening to watch “Despicable Me 2,” the animated movie starring the voice of Steve Carell and featuring the Pharrell Williams hit song “Happy.” Several of the children attending the event came decked out in T-shirts depicting the “minions” from the movie, and their enthusiasm contributed to the festive atmosphere.
The evening was sponsored by the St. Anthony’s Fathers Club, a group of over 100 St. Anthony’s dads and granddads that provide service to the St. Anthony’s community and sponsor social events so that the parents and children of the community can come together and get to know one another. In keeping with the service element of the Fathers Club’s mission, those that attended Movie Night were asked to bring a non-perishable food item to support the food pantry at St. Anthony’s, and several boxes of food were collected for needy people in the community.
In addition to the Outdoor Movie Night, the Fathers Club has previously held several other events for the parish, including an outing to a Long Island Ducks game and a planting day, where over 50 kids and dads planted flowers on the St. Anthony’s grounds and held an old-fashioned Wiffle ball game and BBQ. The St. Anthony’s Fathers Club meets once a month at a local restaurant to discuss and plan events, and get acquainted with each other. The next meeting of the group will take place on Tuesday, September 9 at a local restaurant. All dads (or granddads) in the parish are welcome to join the Fathers Club.
