The Rockville Centre Youth Council has set a busy spring agenda for teens in the community. Its members joined the Mayor’s Youth Task Force and volunteers from the community to spruce up the Skelos Walking Trail in Hempstead Lake State Park this past Saturday, and bagged food at the Vineyard Church Food Pantry on Saturday morning. Before its monthly meeting on Tuesday evening at the Recreation Center, a subcommittee gathered to plan a spring substance abuse awareness artistic campaign.
Coming up on March 20, at 7 p.m. at the Rockville Centre Public Library, the council will join Students Against Destructive Decisions to sponsor “Taking the Fear out of Parenting: How to Communicate So You Can Hear Each Other,” a student and parent presentation with renowned national youth speaker, Jim Tuman. The program brings students and parents together in a “safe arena” to exchange concerns and develop solutions to communication in a supportive and non-judgmental way.
The next evening, from 7-10 p.m. in the Courtroom in Village Hall, there will be a meeting of the Police Explorers, a small group of dedicated teens who are looking for new members. Future topics they will “explore” include the history of law enforcement, the criminal justice system, radio procedures, basic patrol procedures, report writing, criminal law, juvenile law, crime prevention, accident investigation, crime scene investigation, fingerprinting, arrest procedures and more.
And on April 2 at 7 p.m., a presentation for parents: “Do You Know Where Your Children Are?” in the auditorium of South Side Middle School at 7 p.m., will feature panel presentation by Chuck Gennario, RVC Police Commissioner; Art Rosenthal, director of Confide Counseling and Consultation Center; Caroline Sullivan from Daytop Village and Noreen Leahy from Rockville Centre schools. The program is being sponsored by the RVC Drug and Alcohol Task Force and the RVC Youth Council is one of the supporting organizations.
