First, the district was further consolidated into the Republican stronghold it has always been. And as if that weren't enough, many of the election districts moved into the Eighth came from Franklin Square, where Muscarella and his family have been known and respected since Vincent's father set up a law practice and later represented the area as a Town of Hempstead councilman.
But even with these built-in advantages, Muscarella, who lives in West Hempstead, continues to bring to the Legislature a sane and moderate voice. Driven by political theory and philosophy, Muscarella remains focused on representing his constituents in the best way that he can, and not just those more likely to vote for him.
We endorse Muscarella, and not by default. On the contrary, despite the relative ease with which he has been elected in the last few races, he is truly a native son whose commitment to his district is unparalleled. His membership in such groups as the Sons of Italy in America, the Commission for Social Justice, the West Hempstead Civic Association and Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, the Franklin Square Chamber of Commerce, the Knights of Columbus, the West Hempstead Parent-Teacher Association and the Advisory Board of the Nassau chapter of United Cerebral Palsy are not just for show. Muscarella is everywhere.
His willingness to work with the Democratic majority in ensuring what is best for his district is only part of the package. When questioned about controversial issues, such as the since toned-down Sewer and Storm Water Authority, Muscarella did not hide behind numbers or angry partisan rhetoric. He instead gave what he believed was his honest appraisal of the situation, complete with well-thought-out fears and suggestions. He is well aware of the problems of his district quite simply because he is a very real part of it, and we hope he continues to use that understanding in providing the Eighth District with the best leadership available.
His opponent, Malverne attorney Joseph DeFelice, last ran a campaign in 2002 against another popular Republican moderate, State Assemblyman Thomas Alfano, in the 21st Assembly District. The odds are once again against him, but his concerns for the state of Nassau County have at least found him running in the right race. Unfortunately for DeFelice, the "need for change" many challengers are selling in this year's race does not apply in his district. While the ghost of Tom Gulotta still hovers over Mineola, the exorcism of the county's spotty financial past must be carefully performed by both parties. The Republicans, as well as the Democrats, could not have a more valuable voice than Muscarella.
Along with his progressive views on health issues, the rebuilding of the county's aging infrastructure and his knack for not letting the little things slip by, Vincent Muscarella serves his district well, and has earned the Herald's endorsement once again.
The Third Legislative District includes West Hempstead, Garden City, Garden City South, Stewart Manor and parts of Franklin Square, Malverne and Floral Park.
