The North Bellmore Fire Department extinguished a blaze that did extensive damage to a North Merrick home last Sunday, officials said.
The department responded to a fire on Tyrus Court, a North Merrick block near the East Meadow border that falls within the North Bellmore Fire District, at 7:37 a.m. on Dec. 29. A Fire District spokesman said that although the house sustained severe damage, no residents were harmed.
The Nassau County fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the blaze. North Bellmore officials said it might have started as an electrical fire in a car parked in the house’s attached garage. The flames spread through two floors of the home, and it took firefighters 30 to 45 minutes to put them out.
Six of the home’s occupants were standing outside when firefighters arrived. A dog, however, was trapped inside, and firefighters went in to rescue it. The dog was in a pen in the kitchen, officials said. Firefighters entered the back of the burning house and got the dog out through a door near the kitchen, despite the smoky conditions.
Two North Bellmore firefighters were treated at the scene for minor neck and back injuries. Bellmore, East Meadow and Uniondale firefighters also responded to the blaze, while the Merrick and North Merrick fire departments were on standby.
