"I'm thankful to the community for the results," Mucci said. "I see this as their having faith in the Facilities Planning Committee, the [Board of Education] and the administration."
In February 2006, an all-volunteer Facilities Planning Committee recommended pursuing EXCEL dollars for various capital improvements. "I'm disappointed in the turnout, given that taxes are so high," former facilities committee chairman Marc Berkowitz commented, "but I'm happy the district was able to get a small portion of money [from the state] for necessary repairs to the infrastructure."
The funding package is earmarked for various projects, including new fire alarm and smoke detector systems, replacement of kitchen doors with fire-rated ones, exterior masonry and other upgrades at some or all of the district's six schools.
"If and when we go up for a bond issue, I hope we have the same outcome," Mucci added, referring to a possible vote on a proposed $38 million bond issue the Board of Education considering in the spring for more extensive renovations to deteriorating schools.
