This year the community's interest is the greatest it's ever been. Some 340 children signed up to enjoy the many activities the program offers. And Betty Milano, an educator who is program co-director, said kids are so crazy about the arts and crafts, water play, dance and sports, they often come back as teenagers to work as counselors at the camp.
The North Merrick Summer Recreation Program is offered five days a week from 9 a.m. to noon at Old Mill Road Elementary School.
"It's a great place for the kids to socialize, and it ends early enough that they can go on with their day," said Milano. "And kids from all three elementary schools come here so they can meet each other before middle school."
