Nancy Marks, former campaign treasurer for George Santos, to plead guilty in federal court

Nancy Marks, the former campaign treasurer for New York’s most controversial Congressman, George Santos, is set to plead guilty to at least one unspecified felony Thursday at the Central Islip federal courthouse. The charge is in connection with the federal investigation of myriad financial irregularities regarding the Republican representative.

Marks, who worked for Santos’ 2022 campaign but resigned one month after the reveal of the congressman’s numerous lies regarding his personal history and finances, has been under scrutiny for several unusual campaign filings. Most notable of these was a series of $199.99 campaign expenses, which is just below the legal disclosure limit of $200.

In the past Marks had worked for numerous New York politicians, including Lee Zeldin, and for a while she was one of Santos’ closest advisors, working with him during both his 2020 and 2022 campaigns. However, since her resignation her former boss laid all of the blame for his financial issues on her, even telling one conservative news outlet that she “went rogue.”

During his 2022 campaign, Marks filed to amend Santos’ finance report over 30 times. There are currently more than $365,000 in unexplained campaign expenses, including some which were made out to “Anonymous,” and the true source of the $700,000 he claimed to have donated to his campaign from his personal money remains unknown.

This is not the first time that Marks’ has been under scrutiny by federal prosecutors for claims of embezzlement and other questionable practices, although she has never before been charged. Although Santos’ office declined to comment, it remains to be seen how this will affect the 13-count federal indictment against him, which charges him with, among other things, money laundering.

Santos’ next court date is Oct. 27.
