Nassau cops increase patrols after Paris attacks

Nassau police are increasing patrols, particularly at "significant public events" in response to the terrorist attacks in Paris, officials here said Saturday.

And about 30 Nassau County police officers on a pilgrimage to Paris were reported safe in France, Benevolent Association President James Carver said.

"Nassau County police are monitoring these attacks along with federal, state, and local authorities," Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Acting Police Commissioner Thomas C. Krumpter said in a joint statement. "Nassau County police are intensifying patrols in all areas and will increase patrols at significant public events."

The move came a day after the Islamic State, known as ISIS, launched a brutal assault on several locations around Paris that left more than 100 dead.

Expressing their support and sympathy for the French people, Mangano and Krumpter also noted that here at home, "if you see something, say something. Tips can be called into 1-800-244-TIPS. Any police emergencies should be called into 911."

In France, the officers, members of the Holy Name Society, were visiting Paris and other cities in France, Carver said in a news release. Although the PBA and the Holy Name Society are separate organizations, many officers belong to both groups.

In the release, Carver said he was contacted by "hundreds of worried callers" who were concerned about the Nassau group's safety.

"After yesterday's brutal attack, local residents have been calling me to check on the safety of the cops that belong to the Holy Name Society and are currently in France. The group is safe and wishes to thank those who have inquired about them," Carver said. "They wish to state that they, along with all others, stand 100 percent behind the brave people of France."

The Nassau Police Holy Name Society is visiting Paris, Caen, Normandy Beaches, Rouen, Chartres, Le Mont St. Michael and Lisieux. The nonprofit Holy Name Society travels to France yearly as part of a pilgrimage.

Carver said, "All of our hearts go out to the families of the victims of this outrageous and cowardly attack on innocent citizens enjoying a fall Friday night out."
