The center has registered dietitians and certified diabetes educators that can help people with diabetes plan meals and physical activities to help prevent complications.The education center was the first in New York state to be accredited by the American Diabetes Association as meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Education Programs. World AIDS Day



The AIDS Program of Nassau University Medical Center, which is an AIDS Designated Center, will observe World AIDS Day Dec. 1 by conducting a memorial candle-lighting ceremony. The event will be held at NUMC's auditorium from 2 to 3 p.m. and all are welcome to attend.This year's theme is stigma and discrimination - "AIDS Does Not Discriminate, People Do." The Westbury High School Gospel Choir will provide musical selections. Education information and videos will be available throughout the day.NUMC is located at 2201 Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow. Talk to kids about AIDS



Talking with kids about AIDS is a vital, but sensitive issue for parents and families. Adults who care about kids and wish to pass on the information to others are invited to participate in a free two-day training course on this topic offered by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County. The course will be held at 239 Fulton Avenue in Hempstead on Dec. 9 and 16, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Training materials are included. Nassau accredited for mammography services



The Nassau Health Care Corporation is pleased to announce that its Community Health Center at New Cassel/Westbury has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation, a renewal, in mammography services as a result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology.The center is authorized to perform mammography, including operation of x-ray equipment to produce mammograms; processing of films; interpretation of mammograms; medical record keeping; reporting and patient notification; and outcomes data collection.


New treatment



Dr. Robert Lanter of Kind Medical Care in East Rockaway and Rockaway Park has introduced Anodyne Therapy to his practice.The Anodyne Therapy System is a safe, FDA-cleared, drug-free, non-invasive device that uses near-infrared light emitting diodes to safely increase circulation and reduce pain.This is a new treatment for painful neuropothies (diabetic). The results of this improved circulation have been published in several medical journals and include improved sensation and nerve function, pain reduction and healing of chronic diabetic ulcers, according to Lanter. New data show that treatment with this therapy can also improve balance and gait and reduce the risk of falls by 96 percent in the elderly with neuropathy, Lanter said.
