Village Attorney to serve as judge of legal competition’s national finals

A. Thomas Levin, Rockville Centre’s Village Attorney and chairman of Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein P.C’s Municipal Law, Land Use and Environmental Compliance practice, as well as its Professional Responsibility practice, will serve as a judge at the 25th annual “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution National Finals” which will be held at George Mason University from April 27 through May 1.

Nearly 1,200 high school students from all 50 states and the District of Columbia will test their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights during this prestigious competition. Students serve as expert witnesses testifying on constitutional issues in a simulated congressional hearing. Students are scored on their opening presentation and on answers to follow-up questions by a panel of judges, who grade the students on understanding, constitutional application, reasoning, supporting evidence, responsiveness, and participation. The national finals judges include state Supreme Court justices, public officials, political scientists, historians, educators, attorneys and We the People alumni.

“I am honored to have an opportunity to work with the best and brightest students from across the country,” Levin said. “It is my hope that these young Americans become involved in governmental and civic activities and  actively volunteer to improve their communities. These young men and women can make a difference in the future of our nation.”

Levin has a long resume of leadership roles in many organizations in the legal community, including the Nassau County and New York state bar associations, and has been honored numerous times for his devotion to improving the judicial system and his pro bono service. He recently received the 2012 Diversity Vanguard Award from the Metropolitan Black Bar Association.
