New company files for right to operate cabs in RVC

If David O’Neill gets his way, residents of Rockville Centre will soon have a choice of cab companies in the village. Working with attorney Alan M. Stein, O’Neill, the operations manager for Village Car Service, Inc., a Lynbrook-based taxi company, has filed an application with the Village of Rockville Centre to operate a taxi company with four vehicles in the village.

As an official part of the application process, the Sept. 13 issue of the Herald contained a legal notice about the application, that read in part, “written comments or arguments with respect to the qualifications of the applicant and whether public convenience and necessity require such licensing, must be filed with the Village Clerk on or before Sept. 24.”

Village Car Service followed up with two full-page ads in the Herald’s Sept. 13 and Sept. 20 issues, urging residents to email Mayor Francis Murray or Village Administrator Keith Spadaro, asking them to consider the license request and saying that residents would benefit from, and “deserve sufficient choice of car services in the village.” A lack of choice, the ad said, is “not fair.” All-Island Taxi is currently the only car service operating in the village although other companies do come into Rockville Centre to bring people home.

Mayor Francis Murray said village officials are considering the new car service’s application even though they haven’t received many complaints from people who think there should be more cab companies. All-Island Taxi, Murray noted, has upgraded and added new cabs in recent years. Murray also said he’s met O’Neill and is aware of his company’s advertisements. “I don’t know if he’s going to get a license to operate in the village. We’re still looking at it,” Murray said.
